Biography

Judy Lui has loved music ever since she was a child. She started her violin lessons at the age of 6. She began her cello study at the age of 9. One year later, she became the cellist of her primary school’s string quartet, coached by Teng Yuk. Judy was then accepted as a junior student of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) majoring in cello performance under Jetty Hon. She became a student of the Bachelor of music performance in HKAPA on an early admission offer at the age of 15 (after she finished her F.3 from Heep Yunn School). Judy had chances to perform cello duet with renowned cellist Trey Lee and a recital with Chopin Laureate Colleen Lee. She had masterclasses on the Violoncello Piccolo (5-string cello) and Viola da Gamba with Richard Tunnicliffe and James Buch, and masterclasses in quartet with Penzekoi String Quartet, Chilingirian String Quartet, Endellion String Quartet, Szymanowski String Quartet and SNU Chamber Orchestra, masterclasses with famous cellists like Alexander Rudin, Richard Bamping, Apichai Leanthong, François Salque, Steven Isserlis, Tu Jiang etc.

After graduation, Judy has joined the Hong Kong String Orchestra under Artistic & Development Director Yao Jue JP, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Dr Yip Wai Hong and the first all-female professional orchestra based in Hong Kong – HKFW Six Arts Orchestra, Founded by the Chairperson of Hong Kong Federation of Women, Peggy Lam GBS, SBS, OBE, JP. She performs and coaches the orchestra at National Taipei University, Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra Association and Universidade de Macau as a tutor. Judy is also an avid chamber music lover, and she had participated in many musical charity activities and music teachings, tutored at Hong Kong Music Institute and worked at venues and Cultural Services Department Music Office. She is currently tutoring at Hong Kong Children’s Strings Orchestra. In recent years, Lui participated conducting workshop in command training of wind-band music of Conn-Selmer Institute and had masterclasses with Kirk Trevor and Paul Nadler. Lui has hosted a post as tutor and conductor at Hong Kong Youth Strings and Hong Kong Junior Chamber Ensemble. Lui will work with Hong Kong Progressives Philharmonic Orchestra perform as guest conductor.
