Pianist Luu Hong Quang stands as a distinguished figure within the realms of Vietnamese and Australian music, earning accolades from both national and international experts for his masterful performance techniques and his emotionally resonant, compelling style. His academic journey spans prestigious institutions such as the Vietnam National Academy of Music, the Australian International Conservatorium of Music, and the University of Montreal, Canada. Throughout his performance career, Luu Hong Quang has been privileged to collaborate with renowned orchestras across Vietnam and worldwide, amassing numerous esteemed awards in global piano competitions as well as receiving significant accolades from the Vietnamese government.
In 2007, Luu Hong Quang’s academic pursuit reached a pivotal juncture when he was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Australian International Conservatorium of Music, embarking on a path rich with challenges and opportunities. Building on the foundation laid in his home country, the young artist’s abilities were elevated and refined under the mentorship of Professor Kyunghee Lee. Professor Lee praised Quang as “a remarkably talented and diligent student, whose exceptional piano skills are complemented by his intelligence and integrity.”
During this period, Luu Hong Quang achieved outstanding success in Australian piano competitions, securing first prizes in events hosted by the Sydney Eisteddfod, including the Kawai Piano Award, Chopin Piano Award, 19th Century Piano Award, and the Piano Recital Award; he also triumphed in the Lev Vlassenko competition across Australia for ages 16-30, accompanied by four additional accolades. His performances have graced numerous esteemed orchestras, such as the Hanoi Symphony Orchestra, Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, and international ensembles from Florence, Queensland, Sydney, and Wuhan, enhancing his experience and artistry.
In 2011, Luu Hong Quang’s aspirations were further bolstered during his engagement with Professor and People’s Artist Dang Thai Son, following a full scholarship from Japan’s Kirishima International Music Festival. This collaboration provided him the distinguished opportunity to perform at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall.
By 2013, Luu Hong Quang was honored with an invitation from Professor Dang Thai Son to perform a duet in the concert “Dang Thai Son – New Sound in the 20th Century” on December 4th at the Hanoi Opera House. This concert featured early 20th-century global compositions alongside contemporary works by Vietnamese creators. His duet with People’s Artist Dang Thai Son encompassed four compositions by French composer Francis Poulenc, especially remarkable being the dialogic Elégie, one of Poulenc’s seminal pieces, leaving a profound impact on the audience.
In 2014, leveraging his rich knowledge and performance experience, Luu Hong Quang embarked on a new educational journey to pursue a Master’s degree in piano performance at the University of Montreal, Canada, guided by Professor Dang Thai Son. Under this esteemed mentorship, his musical insight broadened, and his performance technique reached new heights of refinement. Professor Dang Thai Son lauded Luu Hong Quang for his high-level professionalism and artistry, noting his “great musical creativity and control on stage, with an alluring stage presence.” He successfully graduated in December 2015 with a Master’s in piano performance.
Upon earning his Master’s degree, Luu Hong Quang returned to Australia, where he currently serves as a lecturer in Solo and Chamber music at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA) in Sydney. His relentless dedication to music has garnered him significant awards in international piano competitions, alongside esteemed recognition from the Vietnamese government for his contributions to the country’s musical landscape.
