Biography
Quang Hong Luu is recognized as one of the most accomplished pianists of his generation, distinguished by his exceptional integration of sensitive lyricism and vigorous expressiveness. His performances have consistently garnered praise from critics who commend his ability to convey a high degree of pianistic professionalism, profound musical creativity, remarkable stage presence, and a level of excellence and maturity that is notable for his age.
His foundational training began at the Vietnam National Academy of Music under the tutelage of Professor Thu Ha Tran. Following this, he was awarded a full scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Music at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Australia, studying under Professor Kyunghee Lee. Quang further advanced his studies with a Master’s degree at the University of Montreal, guided by the renowned pianist Dang Thai Son. He has also participated in master classes with esteemed pianists and educators, including Boris Berezovsky, Robert McDonald, Anton Nel, and others.
In 2011, Quang achieved first prize at the Lev Vlassenko Competition, Australia’s premier piano contest. He has secured first prize in the Kawai Piano Award competition in Sydney, as well as second prizes at the Oleggio International Piano Competition in Italy, the Euregio Piano Award International Competition in Germany, and the Valtidone International Piano Competition in Italy. Additionally, he earned third prize at the Hanoi International Piano Competition and received a prize for excellence at the Chopin Asia International Piano Competition in Japan, alongside being named the winner of the Australian Emerging Artists Concert Series.
Quang has benefited from several full scholarships to participate in international music festivals, including those held in Kirishima (Japan), Pablo Casals (France), and the Sydney International Piano Masterclasses. He has performed extensively with various orchestras, including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, and the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has had the honor of performing under the direction of prominent conductors such as Edvard Tchivzhel, Anthony Weeden, and John Curro.
Notably, Quang is the first young Vietnamese pianist to perform a duet with the esteemed master pianist Dang Thai Son. Since 2014, he has actively engaged in concert tours across Australia, Vietnam, Japan, Europe, China, Malaysia, and the United States, with successful performances throughout southern France. In January 2024, he performed Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Szolnok Hungarian State Orchestra at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
Quang recently released a CD featuring Liszt’s 12 Transcendental Studies under the Rattle recording label. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a full scholarship at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington, where he is studying under the guidance of pianist Dr. Jian Liu, thus continuing his commitment to artistic excellence and professional development.
